Can my phone take an eSIM? Check it before you buy

  • Dial *#06#
  • Look for an EID
  • Unlocked phones only

The short answer

Type *#06# and watch the screen: an EID there means the phone has an eSIM. It must also be unlocked, not tied to the carrier that sold it. iPhones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao mostly have no eSIM.

Does my phone support eSIM?

The makers' own lists

A working eSIM is not refunded because a phone cannot install it, so check your phone before you buy.

If your phone is not on the list

Open the dial pad and type *#06#. An EID on that screen means the phone takes an eSIM. If it shows only IMEI numbers, it does not. The makers’ own lists, linked above, settle the question.

On an iPhone

iPhone: Settings, then General, then About. An iPhone with eSIM support shows an EID on that screen.

On an Android phone

Android: Settings, then About phone; an EID sits beside the IMEI numbers, or dial *#06#.

Carrier lock

If the phone is locked to the carrier that sold it, no other eSIM will run on it. Ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel.

Before you buy

A phone that cannot install an eSIM does not make a working one refundable. Check your phone first.
