eSIM or a SIM card for Thailand: which fits your trip

Both get you online in Thailand. They differ in where you buy them, what you show, and when they start working.

  • No shop visit
  • Passport needed for a SIM
  • A Thai number where stated

The short answer

An eSIM from this site installs at home and gets you online after landing, with no shop visit. A SIM card bought in Thailand is registered at the point of sale, with your original passport, and it gives you a Thai number; whether an eSIM plan includes one is stated on the plan before you pay.

When a SIM card makes sense

A SIM card bought in Thailand runs on one of Thailand’s three networks: AIS, TrueMove H or NT. It gives you a Thai number, and packages are sold on the spot. Registration happens at purchase, and the shop asks to see your original passport.

When the eSIM makes sense

Your phone carries the eSIM before you board, so no shop and no queue await after the flight. After landing you switch it on and set it for mobile data, while your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank codes. When the line will not connect, enable data roaming on the eSIM line: the store names this switch as the fix for a line that will not start.

Questions

Do I need a Thai phone number?

Only if you need to receive Thai calls or texts. Whether a plan includes a Thai number is stated on the plan before you pay; where it does not, WhatsApp keeps your own number and your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank codes.

Do I need my passport to get online in Thailand?

For a SIM card, yes: registration happens at the point of sale, with your original passport. The eSIM is bought online before you fly and installed from the QR code shown right after payment; keep the page link, because your code lives there.
