Bangkok eSIM: online from the airport to the river

Bangkok, Krung Thep in Thai, runs on maps, ride-hailing and its rail systems. With the eSIM on from Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang, the first ride into the centre is a tap away.

The short answer

A Bangkok eSIM is installed at home before you fly and switched on when you land, with data roaming on for the line. The city's airports are Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK), the BTS Skytrain's Sukhumvit line runs from 05:00 to 01:00, and the Chao Phraya Express Boat runs lines along the river.

Where the signal holds

  • 4G and 5G

    Thailand's three networks

AIS keeps 5G pages for consumers, True describes a 5G and 4G network, and NT sells services on its 5G network.

  • Not measured

    Temples and malls

We have not measured signal inside the temples, the shopping malls or the tunnels between stations. Download tickets and a map before you go in.

  • Data roaming on

    Your eSIM

The eSIM runs on a Thai network and shows that network's name in your phone's settings. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM line.

Practical notes

  1. Getting thereSuvarnabhumi (BKK) has the Airport Rail Link from Level B1, 05:30 to 24:00, and route S1 to Khao San Road from Gate 7. Don Mueang (DMK) has BMTA buses A1 to A4 and the SRT Red Line.
  2. Getting aroundThe BTS Skytrain's Sukhumvit line runs from 05:00 to 01:00, with ticket offices open 06:00 to 24:00. The MRT's Chaloem Ratchamongkhon line, the Blue Line, keeps park-and-ride parking at Lat Phrao, and the Chao Phraya Express Boat's commuter lines connect with the rail systems.
  3. PayingThe currency is the Thai baht (THB), divided into 100 satang, and the Bank of Thailand publishes the exchange rates it uses.
  4. When to goThe embassy profile sets out the seasons: summer from March to May, the rainy season from June to October and winter from November to February, with Bangkok averaging around 30 °C in April and 25 °C in December.

Before you go (Bangkok)

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and keep the line switched off until you land. Download offline maps and your tickets while you still have Wi-Fi, in case a temple or a mall has no signal. On arrival, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line only.
