Chiang Mai eSIM: online from the airport to the old city

Chiang Mai's old city is reached by the RTC city bus from the airport, through gates like Tha Pae and Chang Phuak. With the eSIM on from the arrival hall, the ride is a tap away.

The short answer

A Chiang Mai eSIM is installed at home before you fly and switched on when you land, with data roaming on for the line. The RTC city bus runs two loops from Chiang Mai International (CNX) through the old city gates, Tha Pae and Chang Phuak among them, for 30 baht a trip.

Where the signal holds

  • 4G and 5G

    Thailand's three networks

AIS keeps 5G pages for consumers, True describes a 5G and 4G network, and NT sells services on its 5G network.

  • Not measured

    Temples and the hills

We have not measured signal inside the temples, the museums or out at the hill sites. Download tickets and a map before you go.

  • Data roaming on

    Your eSIM

The eSIM runs on a Thai network and shows that network's name in your phone's settings. Turn data roaming on for the eSIM line.

Practical notes

  1. Getting thereChiang Mai International (CNX) has the RTC city bus: the R3 red and yellow loops both start at the airport and call at Tha Pae Gate, Chang Phuak Gate, the Night Bazaar and Nimmanhaemin, for 30 baht a trip. Taxis and Grab also pick up at the airport.
  2. Getting aroundThe R3 loops circle the old city between the gates, so the Night Bazaar, the markets and Nimmanhaemin are a single ride apart; the bus leaves from outside the international terminal.
  3. PayingThe currency is the Thai baht (THB), divided into 100 satang, and the Bank of Thailand publishes the exchange rates it uses.
  4. When to goThe embassy profile gives Thailand's seasons as summer from March to May, the rainy season from June to October and winter from November to February, with the coolest months falling in December and January.

Before you go (Chiang Mai)

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and keep the line switched off until you land. Download offline maps and your tickets while you still have Wi-Fi, in case a temple or a hill site has no signal. On arrival, switch the eSIM line on, choose it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line only.
